Carol Jean Boldenow was born on December 14, 1936 in Moonshine Township to parents Edwin and Edna (Deal) Boldenow. She grew up with five brothers and four sisters. Carol graduated from Ortonville High School and then went on for two years of teaching certification at Northern State Teacher's College in Aberdeen, SD. She taught country school in South Dakota and after marriage, continued to teach for many years in the Bellingham Public School system.
On August 7, 1959, Carol was united in marriage to Melvin Maatz at Eidskog Lutheran Church in rural Ortonville, MN. To this union were born four children; Debra, David, Daniel, and Daren. Throughout her life, Carol felt very strongly about the importance of family, a value she passed on to her children. Education was also very important to Carol and she encouraged each of her children to go on to college and supported them any way she could. One of her greatest delights was becoming a grandmother and she loved each of her grandchildren very much. Carol and Melvin celebrated forty-seven loving years together prior to her passing, most of which was spent on their farm in Walter Township in Lac Qui Parle County.
In addition to caring for her family, Carol contributed her time and talents in many community activities. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, as well as a member of many church groups. She also participated in the Walter Homemakers, Christian Women's Club, Ortonville Quilting Club and the Betsy-Tacy Society. She was also very involved with 4-H at the local level, leading many groups and as a judge in Lac Qui Parle County and other counties. At home she enjoyed sewing, crafts and trying new recipes. She and her husband were avid fans of Bellingham and Ortonville High School sporting events.
Carol passed away Thursday, January 18, 2007 at the Northridge Residence in Ortonville, MN. She is preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Edna; brothers, Donald, Dennis, and Dwight; and her sister, Donna.
