She graduated from Revillo High School in 1957 and then attended South Dakota State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. While at SDSU, she met and subsequently married Alan F. Lohr (Raymond, SD) on September 3, 1960. After graduating from SDSU, the couple settled in the Bay Area of California for approximately 10 years. In 1973, they returned to South Dakota with their 4 children. They farmed near Raymond for several years but then moved to Pierre, SD for 3 years and then to Huron, SD. During these years, Carol dedicated herself to raising her family as well as obtaining her Real Estate License and working as a realtor. Carol and Alan divorced in 1993, and Carol moved to Milbank, South Dakota. There she found a new chapter of life, settling into the Milbank community and making it her home for over three decades until her passing.
Carol was a wonderful cook, inspiring all her children to love and enjoy time in the kitchen. She also loved to travel and went to Norway, Italy, Peru (climbing Machu Picchu in her 70's) Belize, Canada, Spain and Portugal to name a few of the countries that she visited in recent years, frequently traveling with her children, cousin, Calvin Larson, or friend, Bonnie Huber. She also enjoyed many years of wintering in St. Augustine, Florida, with her friend, Janice (Seefeldt) McGowan. She had a passion for reading and playing Bridge and greatly enjoyed gathering with her ladies’ group. Carol was a devoted member of the American Lutheran Church in Milbank, where she formed lasting friendships.
