Funeral services for former longtime La Bolt, SD, resident, Betty J. Schull, age 81, of Milbank, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 28th, at the American Evangelical Lutheran Church in Milbank. Reverend Janine Rew-Werling will officiate. The organist will be Carol Ydstie and the soloist will be Emma Werling. Betty died on Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at the Milbank Area Hospital-Avera Health.
Family members are asked to meet in the church chapel by 10:00 a.m. Saturday to attend services. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home of Milbank on Friday from 5-7 p.m. and will continue in the church Saturday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be Shannon Berg, Lance Berg, Matt Schull, Rod Van Sambeek, Jackie Lowitz, and Taylor Flannery. Burial will be in the La Bolt Cemetery at La Bolt, SD.
Betty was born on December 3, 1927, at the Syrstad family farm in rural Revillo, SD, to Melvin and Esther (Nordquist) Syrstad. She graduated from Revillo High School in 1947.
She married Glen H. Schull on October 18, 1947, at St. Martin's parsonage in Watertown, SD. Following marriage, the couple resided in Revillo, SD; Watertown, SD; Oregon; and Watertown, SD, until 1963 when they moved to La Bolt, SD. Glen died on September 26, 2001. Betty moved to Milbank in 2002 and had entered Park Place in Milbank one month ago.
Betty and her husband owned and operated the Schull CafAC. and Hardware for more than twenty-five years.
She had been a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in La Bolt from 1963 to 1998 when she became a member of the American Evangelical Lutheran Church in Milbank.
Betty loved being with her grandchildren, shopping, and playing cards with family and friends. She was also known for her cooking ability.
Survivors include three daughters: Jeanne Berg and husband Warren, Strandburg, SD; Debra Pierce and husband Verlan, Milbank; and Teresa Flannery and husband Tim, Pierre, SD; one son Steve Schull and wife Patti, Watertown, SD; eight grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; one step great grandson; six sisters: Joyce Peschong, Milbank; Adeline Schull and husband Harold, Hood River, OR; Dona Chambers, Svea, MN; Beverly Syrstad, Milbank; Shirley Gabert, Watertown, SD; and Sharon Weaver and husband Dale, New Underwood, SD; one brother Norbert Syrstad and wife Charlotte, Brookings, SD; one sister-in-law, Jo Schull, Watertown, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband Glen; one son-in-law, Tim Lowitz; one great grandson, Nathan Berg; two infant sisters; one sister, Evelyn Duncan; one sister-in-law, Marge Linneman; and one brother-in-law, Les Schul
