Betty Lou Elizabeth Lureen was born on March 20, 1932 to parents Otto and Barbara (Westermeyer) Lureen at there home in rural Browns Valley, MN; she was one of 12 children. Betty attended country school in the Browns Valley area until the eighth grade.
On September 20, 1947, at the age of 15; Betty was united in marriage to Lawrence Menge at Zion Lutheran Church in Parnell Township. They made their home on a farm in Parnell Township, two miles from Siloah Lutheran Church. When Betty was 16, they were blessed with their first child, eight more followed, making them a family of 11.
Betty enjoyed gardening and canning, she canned many fruits, the bing cherries a favorite of her sons! She also loved to bake and cook. One of her favorite things to cook were Christmas cookies, they were everyone’s favorite. The children always had something home baked when they return home from school. Fridays were Betty’s bread making days.
Betty was a wonderful mother; she was also willing to do anything. A motto that she lived by was ‘there is always room for one more’. She loved to have people over and she would occasionally have overnight guests whether it was a grandchild of other members of the extended family.
Betty and Lawrence lived on the original farm until they moved into Graceville in 1972. After being in Graceville they moved to Ortonville, and then to a home on the lake. They lived there until Lawrence’s death in 1996, at that point Betty moved back to Graceville and then in 2009, she moved into the Grace Home in Graceville.
Betty died on Friday, May 14, 2010 at the Grace Home in Graceville, MN. She had lived to reach the age of 78 years.
Betty is survived by her children: Diane (Milbert) Sullivan Schaffer of Graceville, MN, Dennis (Marilyn) Menge of Faribault, MN, Joyce (Allan) Reynolds of Graceville, MN, Debbie Ballhagen of Graceville, MN, Dean (Janet Zych) Menge of Silver City, NM, Dale Menge of Iowa Park, TX, Doug Menge of Rosemount, MN, Dan (Connie) Menge of Graceville, MN, Delores “Sis” (Todd) Menge of Rosholt, SD; 27 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one brother Joe; sisters: Gen, Darlene, Pat, Delores, Nancy, Mary, Marlene, and Sandy; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; parents Otto and Barbara; and one sister LaVonne.
