Bernice Mathilda Hansen, a longtime resident of Stockholm, but currently residing at the Golden
Living Care Center in Milbank, died peacefully on Sept. 2, 2011. She was 92 years old.
She was born on July 12, 1919 in Stockholm to Charles Arthur and Esther Berg. She attended
grade school in Stockholm and graduated from South Shore High School in 1936 and began working at the Stockholm Bank. Bernice was married to Alvin B. Hansen on March 15, 1941 in Stockholm, and the couple lived on a farm near Stockholm from the time of their marriage until 1989 when they moved to Stockholm. They retired from farming in 1987. Although Bernice preferred city life, she adapted to life on the farm helping Alvin with routine chores, cooking many meals for threshing and silo filling crews.
For 42 years she was the organist at Elim Covenant Church. She taught Sunday School and Bible School, participated in Ladies Aid, church picnics, quilting bees for missions and numerous Bible studies. She loved to study the Bible and was known for keeping many notebooks full of scriptural references that meant so much to her. She was a prayer warrior and would remember family and friends in her daily prayers.
Bernice lived life to the fullest, enjoyed traveling in the US and overseas, reading, good humor and hearty laughs, playing RummiCube, and visiting family and friends. Although she had a rather quiet disposition, she loved conversation and often had kind words to add. She was an expert seamstress and made many quilts for family and missions.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alvin, and one brother, Stanley. She is survived by her brother Charlie Berg of Aberdeen, SD, and sister Louise Carstensen of Rancho Cordova, CA. She is also survived by her daughters, Carolyn (Chuck) Kiefer of Big Lake, MN and Houston, TX, Sandra (Rev.Jim) Nelson of Bloomington, MN, and a son, Harvey (Annette), full time RV'er.
