Arthur Julius Fuhrman was born on September 28, 1910, in Leonardsville Township, MN, to parents, Charles and Mary (Rixe) Fuhrman. He was the youngest of nine children. Art was baptized on October 16, 1910 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Johnson and was confirmed in the church on April 5, 1925. As a young boy, Art grew up on what is the Marlene Fuhrman Farm. Arthur attended District School #50, and he walked it every day with his sister Marie. On his walk to school, the cattle on Henry Rixe's Farm, used to follow him from inside the fence and Arthur ran like crazy because it scared him. While in school, Art enjoyed playing baseball, anti-I-over, (ball over the house). Also as a young boy, Arthur enjoyed raising his pet rabbits.
Arthur's first job, was shoveling a track to the outhouse in the winter and instead of being paid, he was allowed to use it year round. On the farm, he helped by walking behind the drag, and also raking hay. On June 15, 1938, Charles bought a quarter of land which was to be farmed by Art. The land was bare, and Arthur and his dad, planted trees and had a home built. Arthur later added all the other buildings and began working the land with a team of horses named Birdie and Nellie. In 1939, Arthur bought his first tractor, a Farmall F-14. Arthur lived on and farmed this ground until March 2001.
In 1934, Arthur met Eleanor Fischer. In 1940, John Mueller and Art went fishing and stopped in Glenwood, MN, at Wimpy's, to eat and Eleanor worked there. They invited her to come fishing, since she was a "Fischer",which she accepted. Later Eleanor, "bit the hook," and the couple was married on September 15, 1940 in the Villard parsonage and took a honeymoon in Duluth, MN. Art and Eleanor made their home on the farm and were blessed with four children, Darlys, Lorraine, Lorna, and Gary.
Art truly loved to farm, when asked why he choose farming, he replied, "that's the $64 question." He also loved woodworking, and hunting gophers, pheasants, and deer with his nephews. In the spring, Arthur enjoyed watching the sunrise from his farm. He also treasured time spent watching birds and playing cards and games with family. Some special memories of Art and Eleanor's were the trips they took to the East coast, West coast, and to Canada in their pickup camper, visiting relatives, seeing the sites, and especially the mountains in Montana. Art was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Johnson and served his church in various offices and was also a member of the Graceville Gun Club. Arthur cherished the time he spent with family and friends, and will be truly missed.
