Funeral services for Mrs. Ardeth V. Schafer, age 89, of Milbank, and formerly of Revillo, SD, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 14, 2007, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Revillo with Reverend Keith Smith officiating. Ardeth died on Tuesday, September 11, 2007, at the Milbank Area Hospital/Avera Health. The organist will be Donna Johnson and the soloist will be James Kamphenkil. Family members are asked to meet in the church basement by 10:00 a.m. Friday to attend services. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue in the church on Friday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Disposition of her remains will be private.
Ardeth was born on June 25, 1918, in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of Alfred and Cora (Spencer) Collins. She attended country school through the eighth grade in rural Summit, SD. She was united in marriage to Daniel Schafer on May 29, 1940, in Rock Rapids, Iowa. Following marriage the couple lived and farmed in rural Grant County, SD, all of their married life. Daniel died on August 21, 2000. Ardeth entered the Good Samaritan Center in Clear Lake, SD, in February 2005 and entered the Golden Living Center in Milbank in November 2006.
She loved flowers and music.
Survivors include seven sons: Lloyd Schafer and wife Beverly, Stan Schafer and wife Barb, Eugene Schafer and wife Shelly, Gerald Schafer, and Charles Schafer and wife Ruth, all of Revillo, SD; Larry Schafer, Stockholm, SD; and Robert Schafer and wife Jan, Ortonville, MN; sixteen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Wientjes and husband Herbert, Mobridge, SD, and Faith Anderson, Watertown, SD; one brother, Bill Barto, Montello, Nevada; many nieces and nephews; and one sister-in-law, Lois Schafer, Strandburg, SD.
Her parents, husband Daniel, brother Lloyd Collins and three sisters, Evelyn Hogstad, Beverly Chapman, and Iva Smith preceded her in death.
