Alvin Leroy Zimmerman was born on October 27, 1925 in Graceville, MN, at the Holy Trinity Hospital in Graceville, MN, to parents Jacob Philip and Lydia Caroline (Trost) Zimmerman. Alvin attended District #46 Country School, and Trinity Lutheran School before attending high school in Chokio. Alvin graduated from Chokio High School in 1943.
On December 28, 1944, Alvin enlisted in the Navy, and served as a Signalman 3rd Class in WWII. He was honorably discharged on July 25, 1946.
On July 23, 1949, Alvin was married to Ruth I. Fischer at the Trinity Parsonage in Johnson, MN. To this union, four children were born, Karen, Kathie, Kevin, and Kerry. The family made their home on a farm north of Johnson.
Alvin's dedication to his community was demonstrated by his involvement in various boards. He was proud to have served Federated Telephone for almost 25 years. He also served on the Chokio Equity Board and served in various capacities at Trinity Lutheran Church. Alvin was also proud to have served his country during WWII. He was a member of the Chokio American Legion Post #629 and the Charles Leuthard VFW Post #5039.
In his spare time, Alvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, ballroom dancing, bowling, collecting pens, entertaining his grandchildren, and spending time with his family and friends. His highlight each spring was cruising the ditches on his four wheeler picking asparagus.
Alvin lived his entire life on the family farm. He lived life to the fullest, enjoying many years of vacationing at the lake with the whole family. He loved listening to old time music and watching Lawrence Welk. His last days were spent surrounded by his loving family, and trusting in the Lord to take him home.
Alvin passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at the Holy Trinity Hospital in Graceville, MN. He had reached the age of 79. Alvin is preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Lydia Zimmerman and brother Harvey Zimmerman.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth, daughters Karen (Al) Howey of Rogers, Kathie (Gene) Lindblom of Fergus Falls, sons Kevin (Karen) of Lino Lakes and Kerry (Julie) of Elbow Lake; grandchildren Kristine, Michelle, Derek and Craig Howey, Denise, David and Darin Lindblom, Justin, Laura and Mitchell Zimmerman and Jay Zimmerman; great-grandchild Emma Howey; sisters Evelyn Leuthard and Geneva Vesterby; sisters and brothers-in-law Fern Zimmerman, Wes and Erna Magnuson, Vernon and Rouane Fischer and numerous nieces and nephews.
