Larson Funeral Home of Browns Valley, MN announces the death of Alvin Kamstra, age 83 of Beardsley, MN. Funeral services will be Monday, August 1, 2011, at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Beardsley, MN. Pastor Anna Williamson will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 – 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 31, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Beardsley and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Alvin J. Kamstra, the son of George and Aukie (DeVries) Kamstra, was born July 6, 1928 on a farm near Prinsburg, MN. He was baptized and confirmed at the Raymond Christian Reformed Church. He grew up near Raymond and attended Priam Country School and graduated from Raymond High School in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army for 2 years and was stationed in Italy. Upon discharge, he attended the GTA Elevator Managers School in St. Paul.

On September 24, 1949, he was united in marriage to Shirley Strootman at the Raymond United Methodist Church. They made their home in Beardsley. From this union three children were born.

Alvin managed the Beardsley Farmer's Elevator from 1949 until his retirement in 1993. From 1967 to 1974 he and his family also owned and operated a historic resort on Green Lake near Spicer.

Alvin was an involved and active member of his community! For 62 years he was a member of the Beardsley Methodist Church and served on Church Council. He was a member of VFW Post 3694 in Ortonville, served on the Upper MN Watershed Board for 11 years, served on the Beardsley School Board for 23 years, was mayor of Beardsley for four terms, taught Gun Safety Classes for many years, and was involved in several other organizations.

Alvin enjoyed reading, fishing, gardening and everything about the outdoors. He especially enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and colleagues.

Alvin passed away the evening of July 26, 2011 at the Browns Valley Health Center. He will be missed by family and friends and he will be remembered as a kind, gentle, loving man who spent his life devoted to his family, job, and community.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; Son Dennis(Joyce), daughters Judy Frisch and Brenda McNichols; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; wonderful friend Dennis Frisch; brothers Warren (Sylvia) Hebrink, Wes (Beverly) Kamstra and sister Helen (Vernon) Fritz.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Aukie; his nephew, Chuck Hebrink; and his niece, Sally Kamstra.
