Alvin Howen

December 18, 1914 — April 10, 2006

Alvin was born on December 18, 1914 to Cornelius and Mollie (Jensen) Howen on the Howen family farmstead in Big Stone Township. In his younger days, he picked corn with the Minnesota State Champion corn husker, at one time picking and husking over 3,000 bushels of corn by hand in a single season. He joined the Army during World War II, serving from February 1942 to September 1945 and was stationed in Iceland, England and France guarding prisoners of war.

Alvin lived on the family farm nearly his entire life, where he grew wheat, corn, oats, and later soybeans and at one time raised cattle. While in Clinton, Alvin was a very giving neighbor to all, willing to help anyone who needed it and was instrumental in caring for the Big Stone County Fair Grounds.

For many years, Alvin and Ora Mae George spent time together. They loved to go dancing together, and enjoyed traveling across the country on bus trips, one of their favorite trips together was to Alaska. Alvin's quiet, soft spoken way will be missed by all who knew him.

Alvin passed away on Monday, April 10, 2006, at the Beverly Health Care Nursing Home in Milbank, SD. He is preceded in death by his parents, Cornelius and Mollie Howen; one brother, Elmer; and three sisters, Eda, Lillian, and Emma.

Alvin is survived by his very dear friend, Ora Mae George of Ortonville, MN; his brother, Marvin (Gladys) Howen of Dawson, MN, and many nieces and nephews.
